Alex Ferguson fined by UEFA, Nani banned

Manchester United's duo Sir Alex Ferguson and Nani, have been handed punishment by UEFA, in the aftermath of the winger's sending off against Real Madrid, in the second leg of their Champions League Roundof 16 tie. The European soccer's governing body UEFA confirmed the sanctions in a statement today after a meeting of its disciplinary board.

The Portuguese winger, Nani was sent off for a high challenge on Alvaro Arbeloa as both contested the ball in the 56th minute of a 2-1 loss on March 5 which eliminated United in the round of 16.

The red card carried an automatic suspension from United's next European match and UEFA decided there was no additional reason to increase it.

Ferguson was incensed by the red card and skipped his post- match press conference, sending assistant Mike Phelan in his place.

According to his assistant Mike Phelan, Ferguson was 'too distraught' to fulfil his media commitments after United went out of Europe 3-2 on aggregate following Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir's controversial decision to show Nani a straight red card in the second half.

Nani will serve a one-match ban while manager Alex Ferguson was fined 8,500 pounds ($13,000) for failing to fulfill his media obligations after the 2-1 loss at Old Trafford.

"Manchester United FC midfield player Nani has been suspended for one match by UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body, following the red card he received at the UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg against Real Madrid CF at Old Trafford on 5 March," UEFA wrote in a statement.

"Manchester United head coach Sir Alex Ferguson has been fined 10,000 for non-fulfillment of the post-match media obligations at the same match."

UEFA had earlier backed Turkish referee Cuynet Cakir, for his handling of the high profile game.
